Our region is a wonderful area that includes the Peninsula, South Side and areas of North Carolina.  Often times, distance and transportation challenges tend to cause not just physical separation, but also intellectual and even emotional.  This focus area seeks to find ways to maintain and improve opportunities for all of Hampton Roads to collaborate, share and stay connected to improve our collective strength and raise our MSA standings in the nation.

Mission and Purpose Discussions

  • Improving opportunities for north side and south side as well as North Carolina to bond through collaboration, and maintaining high effectiveness in regional cooperation.
  • We believe that a great deal more synergistic and collaborative activity (though respecting identities and independence) will work to strengthen Hampton Roads.
  • All areas of the region are important to true regional strength and identity.
  • We cannot eliminate the transportation infrastructure concern of bridges and tunnels (though improvements are being made), or even distance.
  • What we can do is leverage our individual and collective strengths, seek to work together on collaborative events and projects and mix the location of events in our region.

Potential Actions

  • Make it easy for people to engage on Peninsula and North Carolina.
  • Peninsula and North Carolina might consider hosting more (regional) events.
  • Make the whole region aware of the great efforts from Peninsula (such as Transportation Champions, Start Peninsula and ALL).
  • FHR can act as the marketing engine to “share the news” to the region.
  • Identify collaborate projects.
  • Engage North Carolina as well (future sessions).
  • Military-friendliness concern within Hampton Roads is an excellent combined project to consider.

Our region is a wonderful area that includes the Peninsula, South Side and areas of North Carolina. For the good of keeping our MSA strong on a national basis, we need to work together to respect our differences, but still create opportunities for all geographic areas within Hampton Roads.

FHR suggests that we think of the collective Hampton Roads and never forget about leveraging and including all three regional components in our plans. Can we create collaborative projects and reasonable deliverables? Can we leverage best practices and mirror successful efforts region-wide?

The answer is yes, if we think regionally.
